Born in Brussels and trained in anatomy at the University of Padua (where he would return to teach), Vesalius became the leading figure in the renewed practice of human dissection. He produced two seminal texts, Tabulae sex (Six Plates, 1538) and De humani corporis fabrica (The Fabric of the Human Body, 1543).

Born in Brussels, Vesalius studied medicine at two of the most renowned universities of the time, Paris and Padua.
